Arctic Sea Ice in the news… Already!?!

June 19th, 2008 by Sean Davis · 14 Comments

Yikes.

I didn’t expect to see stories in the news on the Arctic Sea Ice extent this early in the season, since the minimum sea ice extent does not occur until around September. But as of now, it looks as though the melt is tracking last years record loss.

This will be interesting to monitor… For those who are interested, the progress of the sea ice can be monitored here from a webpage set up by the National Snow and Ice Data Center here in Boulder.

Uh, oh. This is not a good thing…

What really worries me is what the weather be like in the next decade. Will it affect food production, water reserves , etc. We also need to be concerned about the islands that are already being lost off the coast of Alaska due to the rising ocean levels and the wildlife that depend on the Arctic climate.

Notice in the article how Bush is already looking into oil drilling off the coast of Alaska. Wish he would quit exploiting Alaska and trying (luckily in vain it seems for now) to destroy its natural beauty.

I came across this today and thought it was appropriate for this article:

“The ultimate test of man’s conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard.”

Of course this is a good thing. Its a very good thing. The more of this that we can get melted off the better. That buys us more time. Bear in mind that while the ice appears to still be melting the oceans as a whole are cooling.

We ought to think harder about what it is we ought to be getting worried about.

    Graeme,

First, why do you think Arctic melting is good?

Second, you are incorrect about the ocean cooling.

    See, e.g., here

We are still learning about the planet we live on.I also feel since it appears air temperature doesn’t have as much effect on the Arctic as otherwise thought (This learned due to the fact it was colder up there this year than it was in recent years.) So we know other things are at play here, like the Pacific and Atlant ocean. Since it melted more on the Atlantic side this year then it did on the Pacific I’d say the Atlantic ocean was warmer this year than the Pacific ocean.
