The Bicycle Commute
Ever since I moved to Boulder in August of 2005, I have been using my bicycle as a primary mode of transportation. My daily commute to campus is 15 miles round trip from my Meadow Creek apartment. I've realized that these miles really add up. So I kept a bicycle mileage log in 2007. It appears that I bike about 1900 miles a year.
Why do I choose to bike around? Many reasons:
1. It is
thrilling to be able to travel under your own power
2. Boulder has a lot of beautiful creek trails to travel on
3. Biking is often faster than taking the bus!
4. It is expensive to drive a car (roughly $0.35 / mile), plus parking
fees if I drive to campus. (Riding a bike is roughly $0.10 / mile).
5. Biking is safer than driving (as long as the trails are located away
from roads).
6. The physical exercise is good for one's health, happiness, energy
level, immune system, and sleep quality
7. This mode of transportation is good for the environment and national
security- zero middle east oil, zero carbon dioxide emissions, zero sulfur,
nitrogen, carbon monoxide, soot emissions
